Nineteenth-Century Popular Culture

During the nineteenth century in Europe, a broad and vibrant spectrum of public and private entertainments was available to an increasingly connected populace, especially in the city. What types of narratives arose from these encounters? How might they be read as sites of communication and cultural change? What is the role of print and publishing in creating narratives of popular culture? These are only a few of the initial entry points; contributors are invited to submit critical works that, in keeping with this year’s theme, engage with any aspect of narrative and forms of popular entertainment in the nineteenth century. Topics can include but are not limited to:

  • Theater
  • Stage Magic
  • Spiritualism
  • Circuses
  • Fairs
  • Music Halls
  • Pleasure Gardens
  • Neo-Victorian representations (including fiction, film, video games, comics)
  • Magic Lantern Shows
  • Music
  • Photography
