Adaptation, Competition, and the Future of the Novel

From the earliest Hollywood films to present day ones, novels have often provided the plot for mainstream cinema. In fact, many contemporary novels are arguably written for the purpose of film adaptation. This panel seeks papers that explore the novel medium’s relationship to popular film and the cultural relevancy of the novel in today’s visually dominated climate. Papers could explore issues such as narrative, mediation, the reaction of “old” media with the advent of new media, and novelists-turned-screenwriters (or vice versa).
