Narrating Victorians

The Victorians were deeply committed to generating metanarratives, especially those relating to Progress. They were also committed to the telling of smaller narratives as attested to by the immense popularity of the novel in this period. This panel will focus on the ways in which narrative is mediated in the nineteenth century. Possible topics may include but are not limited to:

  • Victorian Metanarratives
  • Sensation fiction and melodramatic narration
  • The Victorian periodical press
  • Narrating criminality and class difference
  • First-person narrators
  • Science and Progress in the nineteenth-century
  • Victorian narrative poetry
  • Victorian biography
  • The ways in which current scholars narrate the Victorian period
